The Boston Pops and a New Member of the Family!

It’s been a bit, and I’ve definitely been staying busy! Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to play with the Boston Pops in Worcester and on Nantucket. It was an inspiring experience to work with renowned conductor Keith Lockhart, rehearse at Symphony Hall, and be surrounded by so many talented orchestral musicians. Here is a video of me playing with Brian McKnight, as well as a shot of the stage at the Nantucket show:

In other big news, my wife gave birth to our baby, Isla, on January 1st. Here’s a photo of us at one of my favorite drum shops, Parkway Music. She’s the best!

Natal Drums: Joining the fam!!

I'm super excited to officially announce that I'm a part of the Natal family of artists!!  If you're unfamiliar, check out these drums - especially if you're into a vintage sounding kit that's easy on the eyes!  These drums are easy to tune, easy to play, have a warm "buttery" sound (as described in the Feb 2017 Modern Drummer), and are stunning on stage.  I really appreciate having the support of this company and I'm honored to join this family of bad-ass drummers (who you should also check out if you're unfamiliar:  Marko Djordevic of Sveti and Jonah Smith fame, the shuffle king Jason Smay w/ J.D. McPherson, Jano Rix from the Wood Bros.  These guys are killing!).  If you make it out to a Honeyhoney show this summer come check these babies out!

Andy Suzuki & The Method 2017: New Record, Rockboat XVII & Tour Dates

Can you believe this album cover is an actual photograph?  This album is a fresh sound for AS&TM - very pop/RnB - produced by keyboardist/producer (and legendary story teller!) Juny-Mag. It's gonna make for a crazy live show.  Check out the album "The Glass Hour" and come check us out live at one of these shows!

"Such a Night" with Dr. John & Charles Neville

I'm very excited to announce I'll be joining Dr. John and Charles Neville for "Such a Night" of New Orleans music at the Academy of Music in Northampton MA on February 25th. I've had the great fortune to work with Charles Neville often over the last 12 years and have learned so much from playing and talking with him about music and musicians. I've been a big fan of Dr. John since I saw him perform with Ringo Starr's All Star band in 1989 at one of the first concerts I went to (w/ Ringo, Levon Helm and Jim Keltner on drums!). It's an honor to be playing with these two masters of New Orleans music.

This event is a fundraiser for Blues to Green, an organization whose mission is to harness the power of music to bring people together and inspire positive social change, something we could use a lot of right now! It's also happening the weekend before Mardi Gras, so get your friends together, get some tickets and come party it up!

New Catfish Blue record "Sky Grows Light" out today!

If we've been friends for a long time or if you hung out at La Cocina in Pittsfield MA a lot in 1997, you probably know about a band called Catfish Blue. We played roughly a million gigs between 1996 and 2003 but parted ways before recording a whole album's worth of material. This past summer we got together for a week in MN and went into the studio to finally lay those songs down. It was a great week of music, inside jokes, basement rehearsals, family + friends, gigs and recording with Sean McPherson Steve McPherson and Todd Stentiford. I'm very excited to share the result, "Sky Grows Light" by Catfish Blue - please check it out!

Click here for "Sky Grows Light" and all other things Catfish Blue.

"Sky Grows Light" is a brand new record of songs written 15 years ago by a band that doesn't really exist.

Keeping the Irons in the Fire

It's hard to believe we're only a little over a month into 2016. I've been all over the place, and I've already been lucky enough to work on several projects with talented musicians who are also great friends.

I hit the ground running on New Year's Eve playing with Joelle and the Pinehurst Trio at a restaurant in Times Square. It was a crazy but very cool experience.  A week later I got back on the road with my pals HoneyHoney. We traveled down the west coast opening for one of my new favorite bands, JD McPherson. Getting to know JD and his band as we traveled from Vancouver to San Diego was a great time. The band is killing and all super sweet, and I hope to hook up with them again in the future.

When we were got to Los Angeles I finally had the opportunity to go to NAMM, something I've wanted to do for years.  I connected with a bunch of great companies that I love (more on that in the future). A highlight was meeting one of my personal heroes, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie!

I flew from San Diego to Miami to spend the last week of January with Andy Suzuki and the Method on the Rockboat XVI. We cruised from Florida to Costa Maya Mexico then to Grand Cayman Islands. Like last year, it was an incredible experience playing for appreciative crowds, being surrounded by great music, and getting to make friends with some really talented musicians.  It wasn't easy saying goodbye to the Method and the climate, but flying west to Denver meant a reunion with HoneyHoney and headlining new venues in Colorado with a new set list.

After a week in the mountains, I flew back home to get the semester at Williams started and meet some new students.  I can't believe it, but this is my 10th year teaching drums at Williams College!

It's kind of crazy, but somehow this year already seems like it will be busier than 2015. In a good way! I'm back on the road now with HoneyHoney until the end of winter, and I'm looking forward to continuing to polish up the new songs we're performing over the next couple of months.  Come check us out if you can! Tour dates are on my shows page, and on HoneyHoney's website . There's nothing as good as seeing old friends while on the road, except for making new ones!

Good things happening in Pittsfield! Whiskey Treaty Roadshow Live CD/DVD

For those of you who don't know, The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow is like the Captain Planet of folksy roots-rock music. Five individuals with each their own unique and powerful singing and songwriting gifts: Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock, and of course, Heart.  And when their powers combine...

Anyway, these guys are the shit and have a lot of energy, soul and great songs to share. Last Monday I was lucky to join them (Billy Keane, Tory Hanna, David Tanklefsky, Greg Smith, Chris Merenda along with bassist extraordinaire Andy Wrba) in recording a live CD/DVD as part of the "Shire City Sessions," a new this year Pittsfield concert series that will hopefully be around for many years to come.  Check back for some clips soon.

Also thanks to Hudson Whiskey for providing arguably the most important part of any Whiskey Treaty Roadshow performance:  the whiskey!  And to the Novel Ideas for opening the show - they are awesome!

Honeyhoney Summer US Tour 2015: A Retrospective.

I'm looking back on this Honeyhoney tour and I'm glad we made these videos cause it's all a blur at this point. Weeks on the road? 12. Show's played? 45. Bison seen? 1. Visits to Denver? 3. Denver Omelets? At least 30. Miles driven?  About 1.3 million by my estimate.  It was crazy and a lot of fun. If you missed it, no worries: We're hitting the road again this fall.  Check us out!
